It had been one year since Harper found a pirate's treasure, and the beach still felt like the best place on Earth.

Every morning before the tourists woke up, she walked the shoreline near her grandmother's cottage, exactly the way she always had. The gold of Captain Redthorn now sat behind glass in the town museum, with a little card that read DISCOVERED BY HARPER AND DIEGO. Sometimes kids asked her to sign their notebooks. It was strange being a little bit famous in a town this small.

'You would think finding a treasure would be enough for one lifetime,' she told the gulls. But if she was honest with herself, some quiet part of her still listened to the waves every morning, half hoping the ocean had left her something new.

Last night, it had. A huge autumn storm had roared across the coast until well past midnight, rattling the cottage windows and throwing spray halfway up the cliffs. Now the beach lay strangely still, and it did not look the same as it had yesterday.
